Time-Pink Floyd

"Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say
Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
When I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away, across the field
The tolling of the iron bell

Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spell"

Pink Floyd is one of the most influential band from the 60's. The song "Time" is from their album released in 1973 called Dark Side of the Moon. It is their 8th album released and through their songs, it portrays the impacts if mental illness someone may struggle with.

I first listened to this song in eighth grade when my brother and I were hanging out at home. He always had a variety of records that he collected from local record stores. This album in particular was the one he played the most on his record player. I never really listened to the lyrics, I just enjoyed the sound of the musical instruments. Their entire discography is relaxing and puts you into a very good mood. It was until my brother began explaining the importance of this album, more specifically this song, and why I should pay attention to what it is saying.
First off,  the song starts off with a very loud rhythm of ticking clocks and the sound of instruments playing in the background. These sounds created in the beginning of the song create a sense of alarm and the idea to "Wake up" from whatever it is that you are doing. The first stanza of the song also reveals a journey of someone's life and how they wait around for something to happen.
There is also contrast created when sunshine, rain, life, and kill are used. "No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun." deals with the idea that you miss out on life being distracted with things that don't really matter and then one day you wake up to realize that there is nothing you can do about it. This song also amplifies the idea that people are constantly living like robots in repeated and continuous patterns.
The part in the song where it says "The time is gone" reflects on the overall theme of reflecting on your life and looking for a meaning to live in the moment and not take the time you do have for granted. "Time" excels at portraying a visual meaning of time and how the universe is always present. It also presents the circle of life that people live which eventually leads to a regretful death by not doing the things that you may have wanted to when you had the chance.
The last stanza, deals with how at the end of the day home is where we want to be. We long for being close to our loved ones and when we are at a distance we miss it. This can also reflect how nostalgic people are often affected by change.
Overall, this song will always be one of my favorite songs because you only get one life, and if you want to live your life to the fullest you need to take risks and adapt to change. Change is a part of life and the universe's way of telling us that what we have right now is not going to be there forever.

New Order- Crystal

"We're like crystal, we break easy
I'm a poor man, if you leave me
I'm applauded, then forgotten
It was summer, now it's autumn

I don't know what to say, you don't care anyway
I'm a man in a rage (just tell me what I've got to do), with a girl I betrayed
Here comes love, it's like honey
You can't buy it with money, you're not alone anymore,
(whenever you're here with me),
You shock me to the core, you shock me to the core

We're like crystal, it's not easy
With your love, you could feed me
Every man, and every woman
Needs someone, So keep it coming
Keep it coming, keep it coming, keep it coming
Keep it coming, keep it coming, keep it coming
Keep it coming

I don't know what to say, you don't care anyway
I'm a man in a rage (just tell me what I've got to do), with a girl I betrayed
Here comes love, it's like honey
You can't buy it with money, you're not alone anymore,
(whenever you're here with me),
You shock me to the core, you shock me to the core

Keep it coming, keep it coming, keep it coming
Keep it coming, keep it coming, keep it coming
Keep it coming, keep it coming, keep it coming"

Song written and composed by Gillian GilbertPeter HookStephen Morris and Bernard Sumner.
New Order is a band that gradually emerged from a band called Joy Division following their lead singer's suicide, Ian Curtis. New Order has become one of the most influential band from the 80's. The song "Crystal" is from their 7th album called Get Ready.

I remember asking my dad why I was named "Crystal". As you get older, you just demand answers from your parents, and you try to find out what they did in their past and why they did it. It always seemed to me that names always possess a hidden meaning to them. My name represents a mineral and also transparency.
He referred me to this song that he explained was symbolic of his and my mom's relationship when they were younger. The two of them are separated ever since I was four years old, but this band has helped me understand and get through the fact that they are not together and live two completely separated lives. Not only does this song create a sorrowful tone because it deals with the idea that people make mistakes that eventually turn out to hurt their loved ones. It also reflects on how love can blind you from reality, and then one day you have to wake up and face the truth. The truth may be ugly, but it is something that we all have to confront sooner or later no matter how much we don't want to. Love is fragile and complex, which is why the word "Crystal" is used. The song can lead to imply that betrayal destroys something so pure and innocent, and once that innocence is destroyed, it is difficult to repair. Love is also compared to honey, suggesting that it is sweet and also that is priceless when compared to money. The song amplifies the value of faithfulness and loyalty in a relationship. The more I analyze this song, the more I comprehend how my father must have felt of not cherishing what he had, when he had it. The song also expresses the universal truth that at the end of the day, we need someone to share our lives with, to learn from each other, to grow as individuals, and to reflect on past mistakes and persevere from a tragic downfall. It is obvious that the speaker of this song is facing reality that relationships are not easy but they are worth fighting for. Love is symbolized as being something that illuminates the soul and keeps it from dying out. The shift in this song is when it talks about seasons. I see this as a comparison between seasons and emotions and how they change over time. Although we might think we have unconditional love for someone, that can quickly change because life gets in the way. Maybe one person's feelings remain the same, but the other might slowly drift away from those emotions they once had. I admire the way this song was written because even though it is a break-up song, it also gives hope. The idea that no matter what happens he will always be there for here through the rough times. Love is immense and it impacts your entire body, mind, and soul.
